The Organizing Committee of the 1st International Antifascist Conference of Porto Alegre announces the resumption of its work with an open meeting on September 23, 2025 (Tuesday), at 6:30 p.m., at the Sindibancários Auditorium (424 Gen. Câmara St. – Historic Center, Porto Alegre). The meeting marks a new stage in the organization process of the conference, which will take place from March 26 to 29, 2026, in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul.
The meeting will feature Professor and political leader Eric Toussaint, an international reference in social struggles and criticism of the global financial system. Toussaint is a Belgian historian and political scientist, spokesperson for the Committee for the Abolition of Illegitimate Debts (CADTM), and author of several works on political economy, neoliberalism, and social movements. He has served as an advisor in public debt audit processes in countries such as Ecuador and Greece.
Conference Context
The International Antifascist Conference was born from the initiative of Brazilian organizations active in the south of the country, bringing together the support of movements, parties, and social entities from 31 countries across 6 continents. Originally scheduled for May 2024, it was postponed due to the largest flood in the history of Rio Grande do Sul, which mobilized efforts of solidarity and reconstruction.
Now, the call is being resumed in the face of a global scenario marked by the rise of the far right, the strengthening of neofascist currents, and threats to social, democratic, and environmental rights. Porto Alegre was chosen as the host city for its tradition of democratic resistance—from the 1961 Legality Campaign to the World Social Forum in the early 2000s.
The international meeting in March 2026 will seek to articulate, on a global scale, the struggle against the far right and fascism, building spaces of solidarity and unity among peoples and movements.
